In The Name Of Your Daughter is an inspiring documentary about the most courageous girls in the world, Tanzanian girls as young as eight who are making the most difficult choice of their young lives: whether to run away from home, leaving everyone they love behind, or submit to genital mutilation and child marriage.

It’s the story of one of Africa’s most charismatic and determined women, Rhobi Samwelly, who gives the girls safe harbour and confronts her community in an effort to make lasting change. Rhobi herself nearly died when she was cut at the age of 13, which is why she started a Safe House for girls at risk.  Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is illegal in Tanzania, but old traditions are difficult to change.

Last December and January, Giselle spent two months at the Safe House in Mugumu, Northern Tanzania, filming with the young runaways who escaped the chillingly named cutting season. She and her crew also filmed as Rhobi campaigned against FGM, and witnessed the police as they fanned into  villages to rescue girls; and later on, she documented the difficult attempts to reconcile the girls with their families.

Please join us at 7 pm and come watch this powerful and important documentary that gives a voice, for the first time, to young girls who are standing up for their fundamental human rights; a documentary that proves that even young children can help change the course of history. After we watch the Director Giselle Portenier, will talk about the film and share her experiences.

Wine and Cheese will be served, and a donation of $10.00 is requested.

Giselle Portenier is a two-time Peabody award documentary filmmaker with a special interest in the human rights of children and women.
